Cocktail Review: Hendrick’s Cucumber Cooler

Does this warm weather have you craving a cool summer drink? Perhaps your mind has wandered back to an afternoon of Cucumber Coolers and croquet at last summer’s D&Q Seersucker Social. Light, ambrosial, and refreshingly different, Hendrick’s Cucumber Cooler is that leisurely summer afternoon in a highball glass.  Hendrick’s Gin derives its unique flavor from an infusion of Bulgarian Rose followed by a cucumber mash, giving it a floral nose and mellow mouth feel. Add lime, simple syrup, St. Germain, mint, and a splash of soda and you have the perfect summer cocktail. Gin is a versatile spirit with a complicated history. It’s been brewed in bathtubs and consumed whilst rollin’ down the street in the L-B-C.  But Hendrick’s Cucumber Cooler is a classy throwback to gin’s Victorian heyday, when gin-based cocktails first appeared Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management (the Bible for every stylish Victorian homemaker). Take a sip, and let it transport you to another era.
